Red carpet hair colour
Meet Catherine Boden, creator of the Hollywood ColourBlend™, to discover the inspiration behind her head-turning technique and how you too can get the stunning natural look.
So, you’re the Hollywood ColourBlend™ woman. How did you begin to develop the perfect ColourBlend™? My technique was developed by my passion for recreating children’s hair colour; you know, that natural fade from dark to light. Gabby, my niece, has been my muse. I’ve spent a lot of time studying her hair colour since she was as young as three years old. When Gabby was little, I noticed the way her hair colour would change in different lights and how the tones changed from season to season with a seamless blend. I studied the way her hair looked from root to tip and then recreated that look on my own hair, then on close friends and family. After spending two years of trial and error, I mastered the perfect ColourBlend™. Six years on, and I have perfected the look on all hair types. We specialise in Asian and Caucasian hair.
How does the ColourBlend™ process differ from traditional highlighting and colouring? The ColourBlend™ process is a lot of work and can take, on average, five to six hours. We use foils, but not in the traditional way. Placement of foils is key to creating the perfect ColourBlend™’. We tease and backcomb the hair to soften the line between your natural colour and the bleach. It’s a mess when you take the foils out; the hardest can be combing it out. Then the magic happens, up to 15 shades of colours are seamlessly blended, creating the perfect shade to complement the client’s skin tone and eye colour.
Describe to our readers the most challenging transformation you have ever done. The most challenging transformation I’ve done to date was a client who flew in from Kuwait, she wanted me to take her very dark, almost black, hair to light brown. She had previously had henna applied to her hair and at the time, I had no idea how challenging it would be to remove it. After a colour test, I stripped her hair using foils; however, due to the build-up of henna, her hair turned green. I eventually managed to correct the green with a red tone and was then able to ColourBlend™ her hair to the perfect shade of brown.
Why do you think people are willing to travel so far to have their hair done by you? I’ve invented a unique colour blending technique, which lasts up to three times longer than other leading colouring techniques. Each ColourBlend™ is tailored to the client and therefore no two colour blends are the same. We offer a bespoke, one-to-one service that no other leading salons can offer. We’re able to do this by taking the time to understand what the client wants and by creating the hair they’ve always dreamed of.
Who can have a ColourBlend™? The ColourBlend™ technique is suitable for most people of all ages and ethnicities. The only stipulation is that a client’s hair must be free from bleach for a minimum of six months prior to having a ColourBlend™. We are predominantly a ladies-only salon; however, we have had a male client or two over the years, including Manchester United’s midfielder Marouane Fellaini.
And how long does the ColourBlend™ last? If you don’t have greys, the ColourBlendTM will last between three to six months, but on virgin hair, it can last up to 12 months.
What do you recommend women do to find their perfect colour? Come and see us. Creating the perfect colour is what we do. We would always encourage clients to bring images of the look they are aiming to achieve, however, if you’re unsure of what will suit you, leave it to us.
We know you have amassed a huge following of clients, each of whom praise your work. Who is your most famous client to date? My most famous and publicised client was Tulisa, when she was a judge on The X Factor. I took her from a dark brown colour to a blonde overnight. I also work with a lot of soap stars, models and footballers’ wives. The latest well-known clients being the likes of Seema Malhotra and Stacey Forsey from The Real Housewives of Cheshire, Faryal Makhdoom, Conna Walker (House of CB’s Founder and CEO), actress and humanitarian Armeena Khan and well-known fashion blogger Naomi Genes.
We love the luxurious feel of your salon. What inspired the design and choice of interior accessories? Thank you. I was really inspired by José Eber’s salon in Dubai. We combined gold, black and creams – all my favourite colours to make the salon feel timelessly elegant and luxurious. We sourced our furniture and accessories from all over Europe, with our most expensive buy being the chairs, which we sourced from Italy.
Finally, and most importantly, how can our readers book an appointment? Is there a waiting list?
