Meet Mark turner – headmaster of Lady Barn house school
Engaging and utterly committed to mixed- sex education for three to eleven-year-olds, classicist Mark Turner is in his third year as Headmaster of Cheadle’s 500-strong Lady Barn House School, the largest preparatory school in the north.
After ‘defecting’ from secondary teaching in 1988, Mark spent two decades in both state and independent primary schools. Following his second headship (a seven- year stint at Warwick Preparatory School), he moved up North in September 2016.
Privately educated, Mark Turner has complete insight into your expectations as a parent and your child’s need for a tailor-made programme. His belief in honesty when identifying the appropriate senior school for your youngster is easily upheld at this independent school. Founded in Fallowfield in 1873 by
the trailblazing Victorian promoter of co-education, W.H. Herford, Lady Barn House School has no links or allegiances to any secondary school.
Lady Barn House School is known for achieving 11 + successes. Mark explains, “We have 70 brilliant full and part-time teachers who are passionate about their vocation, love children and devise innovative teaching techniques for them.
We’re neither a hothouse nor cram school, but we do attain great results. Our broad curriculum is well-rounded and extends much further than maths and English.
For instance, we introduce Mandarin from Year 1.’’
He continues, “Education’s about helping children to think for themselves. For them to develop a sense of purpose, community, ethos and self-worth, we start early. We want your child to travel a kind, friendly journey of discovery, opportunity and success – and to enjoy that hard-earned success. But it’s equally important each individual learns and displays ‘old- fashioned’ manners, respect and kindness to others, not merely here within our culturally and religiously diverse school community, but outside it, too.”
Lady Barn’s teacher-pupil ratio is capped at 22-1. Teaching assistants for its 3-9-year- olds boost this ratio to 11-1. Your child has a choice of 70 extra-curricular clubs, ranging from music, computer coding, drama and debating to archery, football,
cricket and netball. The school’s cross- country and indoor ski teams are North of England champions and Lady Barn gymnasts have represented Great Britain. Complementing these outstanding sporting attainments are four choirs, an orchestra and ensembles, plus an active drama department, soon to perform Bugsy Malone. And should your child require special assistance, Lady Barn will do its utmost to accommodate and help.
Children are Mark Turner’s priority. He explains, “We must provide our youngsters with the tools to do a good job. We must also do a good job ourselves in providing those tools. Once we know our children have grasped and acquired those tools, they will be equipped for life and hopefully apply them as good citizens.”
Approachable and down-to-earth Mark Turner conducts regular tours for parents interested in this unique and well-established prep school. If you think the Lady Barn education may suit your family, please get in touch.
